Teen Green

When

Tuesday, June 25 at 9am

Details

Team Green is committed to connecting the Nashville community to the great outdoors. This includes our youth. So Team Green is partnering with the Oasis Center to organize the first Teen Green event on June 25, 2008. The goal of Teen Green is to connect our youth with the outdoors by providing healthy activities in their natural, local environments. With an increase in obesity and a disconnect with the outdoors in our youth, Teen Green’s vision is to instill a greater appreciation for our environment and to allow kids the opportunity to be active in nature.

The Oasis Center has a summer outreach program with various metro schools. We chose Bailey Middle School because the majority of students live around Shelby Bottoms Park and Green ways and can learn how to engage with their park ongoing and throughout then year. We will meet at 9am at the Shelby Park Nature Center and hike along the trails around the Cumberland River. A nature center expert will discuss vegetation, the importance of trails and green ways, and point out wildlife. Team Green Director will discuss the importance of physical activity in the outdoors. After a two hour leisurely and educational walk, we will enjoy a healthy, natural picnic lunch from the Turnip Truck.

Team Green hopes that this first Teen Green event will spawn more outdoor activities for our youth across Nashville. Sponsors for the inaugural Teen Green event include the Nashville Hiking Meet-up, a local group that plans hikes throughout the year; the Oasis Center, dedicated to help, grow, thrive and create positive change in Nashville’s youth; and WRLT Lightning 100, Nashville’s only independent local radio station. Hey laurel —-great concept. I would like to help out sometimes when I am not in school. Any plans for a camping trip?
