DETAILS FOR VOLUNTEERS:
Weather: Rain or shine
Weather.com reports this storm will clear by 9 a.m. and skies will remain mostly sunny all day long so DO NOT BE FOOLED by that morning storm. We’re 100% a go; come at your original scheduled time. Early morning volunteers (8 a.m./9 a.m.) please come at original times.

What to Bring:
Work gloves, work boots or other non-slip shoes, and protection from sunburn and bugs (ie., long sleeves/pants). No open toe shoes will be allowed. Bring your own refillable water bottle; Metro Water will refill them throughout the day.
Proof of Participation
Participants must wear at all times an official event wrist band. Bands contain an emergency contact number and serve as your official ticket for prize drawings and Kathy Mattea’s appreciation show at the close of our day.
What You’ll Do
Collect all garbage including cigarette butts, cans, styrofoam, plastic, grills, tires, shoes, clothes, boat parts, inner tubes, pre-bagged trash, etc. If an item is too large or awkward to remove, advise your Team Leader of the approximate location for the team’s roster. Do not risk your health or safety to reach or remove.
Arrival
Upon arrival, please report to the “Pre-Registration” tables where you’ll receive a wrist band (to be worn at all times), garbage bags, gloves, snacks, and important instruction needed throughout the day.
Age Restrictions
Participation by volunteers 16 years and younger is not encouraged due to the risks associated with water and waste.
Motorized Boats
Personal motorized boats will launch from the Old Hickory Boat Ramp, at the end of Old Hickory Blvd., ¼ mile east of Nashville Shores. Please report directly to this ramp rather than checking in at Nashville Shores. You’ll find adequate parking, and further instruction from event reps, at the boat ramp.
Paddlers
Paddlers with their own kayaks and canoes will check-in at Nashville Shores and will be directed to a shoreline for put-in. TSRA will review safety and assess adequate experience before paddlers embark. Paddlers must provide their own PFD.
Safety
Patrol boats will be near; however, should you encounter trouble and need assistance, call the emergency contact number on your wristband before attempting to flag a patrol boat. Occupants of all watercraft must wear a properly fitted and certified Personal Flotation Device (PFD). EMTs will be based across the lake, including posts at Nashville Shores and Elm Hill Marina. For help, dial 615-218-7994 from a cell phone and a response team will be dispatched promptly.
Food/Drink
Lunch is offered for $5 and includes a ‘burger or hotdog, chips and drink. We’ll provide water and light snacks. For health and safety reasons, outside food, beverages, grills, glass containers coolers or alcohol are not allowed.
Team Green is partnering with Cumberland River Compact and Bridgestone Americas to clean-up one of the most polluted lakes in Tennessee right here are our backdoor: Percy Priest Lake. Volunteer for half the day or the entire day to pick up waste at several of the numerous polluted islands. All materials will be provided including boats for transportation to the islands, trash bags, gloves (note: they are not waterproof), water, and snacks. Please spread the word to everyone who cares about our waterways- as we anticipate over 500 volunteers to participate throughout the day.

What
Percy Priest Lake’s 24 islands and 213 miles of shoreline are grossly polluted. The Corp of Engineers estimates as much as 200 tons of trash tops the islands, and a hundred times more has fallen to the bottom of the lake. We are identifying the most polluted islands with the Corp so we can scrub the areas of greatest need. We expect this to be the single, largest clean up project in Nashville to date, collecting 15 to 20 tons of waste and debris left year-round by campers, boaters & recreationalists.
Who
Bridgestone Americas is partnering with Team Green, the Corp of Engineers, and the Cumberland River Compact to organize a city-wide clean-up of polluted islands on Percy Priest Lake with a team of as many as 1,000 volunteers. Major recording artist Kathy Mattea has pledged her talents for a benefit concert for all volunteers. Other partners include ThinkMEDIA, Nashville Shores, Elm Hill Marina, Waste Management, Whole Foods, Tennessean Scenic Rivers Association, Metro Beautification, Metro Water & Public Works, Hands On Nashville, local marinas.
Where
Volunteers will meet at Nashville Shores waterpark and be shuttled in strategic fashion to identified islands. Nashville Shores will also be the staging area for a garbage barge and dumpsters that will serve as key visuals for comprehensive media coverage.

We’re offering several options for volunteers that day with three-hour increments beginning at 8:00am and ending with the 1-4:00pm slot.
Why
Percy Priest Lake’s islands accumulate tons of human-imposed debris every season. The metals and plastics leach chemicals into the water and threaten the habitat for aquatic species and birds in Tennessee and beyond – it is conceivable that Percy Priest trash could flow all the way to the Gulf of Mexico and into the Dead Zone. Cleaner islands and shoreline will improve habitat and water quality, reduce mosquito breeding and populations of scavenger species (crows, squirrels, pigeons, rats) and provide more enjoyable recreation for all. News media covered this issue in 2007’s high season but neither a solution nor clean-up has been organized. Springtime, before boating season begins, is the ideal time to mobilize education efforts. We plan to work with legislators and Army Corp of Engineers to create “No Polluting” signs and fines for future violators. We also plan this as a seasonal/ annual city-wide clean-up.
