NANTAHALA RIVER WEEKEND
When
Friday, July 11-13
Details
THIS TRIP IS CLOSED.
Cool off with Team Green July 11th through July 13 for a weekend trip to the Nantahala River! Located in mountains of western North Carolina, the Nantahala River Gorge is robust with adventure so our weekend will include camping, hiking, rafting, funyaking, and/ or mountain biking. FUNYAK the Nantahala River Saturday afternoon with a group of Team Greener’s!
CAMPING & DEPARTURE
You can choose to depart Friday afternoon or early Saturday morning and camp Friday and/or Saturday nights. Caravan/ Carpool details coming soon. We will be staying at the Appletree Campground, a perfect getaway, with easy access to eight hiking trails that offer 32 miles of variety and adventure. We will be staying at Site B which has a fire ring, picnic shelter, flush toilets, showers, and running water.
RAFTING
Saturday afternoon, Team Green will be picked up from the campground at 11:00amEST and shuttled to the Nantahala Outdoor Center for check-in. After Team Green checks in, we’ll get fully equipped, receive personal instruction, and be shuttled 7 miles upstream to the put-in where your white-water fun begins.
On the area’s most scenic terrain, you will experience over 20 named rapids, including Quarry, Whirlpool, and Lesser Wesser. There are plenty of waves to crash through and several calm water opportunities to simply enjoy the natural beauty and wonders of the Nantahala River and the Great Smoky Mountains
You will have a choice of rafting with four of your best buddies (unguided) or funyaking in a one or two man funyaks. (Please note that this river is between the Ocoee River and Hiwassee River in difficulty and has Class III rapids). Or you can bring your own kayak to be shuttled for a $5 shuttle fee.
After a day on the river, we will have a fun cookout at NOC’s Paddlers Inn then be shuttled back to our campground. Team Green will return to the campground for a peaceful evening under the stars.

More about the Nantahala
In the heart of the Nantahala National Forest, the Nantahala River is a family friendly, nationally recognized river of recreation. The most popular in the Southeast, it is one of the oldest rivers in the world and gets its name from an Indian word meaning, “Land of the noonday sun”. It is a Class II-III dam-controlled river pulling its water from the bottom of Nantahala Lake. The water is released from a dam about 15 miles upstream and pulled from approximately 250 feet in depth, and released daily. Since the water does not see sunlight until its release, it ranges from 48-50° year around. The pristine, crystal-clear mountain water then runs its course through the Nantahala River emptying into Fontana Lake. March through October, your adventure begins at the Adventurous Fast Rivers Rafting outpost on the banks of the Nantahala River, in the Nantahala Gorge, 14 ½ miles West of Bryson City, North Carolina on Highway 74.

Are dogs allowed at this park/on this trip? My dog likes to ride in a canoe, but I didn’t see that as an option. If dogs are allowed, would I be able to carpool with anyone?
Thanks. Erin.
It may be too dangerous for a dog on this river. You may want to call the outfitter and ask them. You can leave the dog at the campground though you take a risk in case of bears or other wild animals. It’s up to you.
Do you have to pick 3 other people before you can reserve a spot on a raft? I don’t know that I know anyone else that is going.
You will be paired with your team for the rafts so no need to worry about finding partners.
Looking forward to the trip!
I’m all up for this trip – I’ll bring my own boat if they will shuttle, I think they charge for that but not sure how much. Anyone up for mtn biking Tsali? It’s just up the road.
Hi Michelle, We have a group (4 that I know of) that will be riding Tsali on Sunday morning. I’m not sure if NOC will shuttle boats. Maybe Laurel will know.
The fee to shuttle your own boat to the put-in location is $5 per person
can a 15 year old son participate?
The age/weight requirement for the Nantahala Trip is 7 years old or 60 lbs, so Alan, your 15 year old is good to go!
Please register me for this trip.
Hello Michelle,
I will be driving a 4 runner with a stacker rack on top, and I am looking for someone who wants to share a ride. I am bringing my kayak and mountain bike, and would have room for another kayak and mountain bike. If you already have arrangments, please pass this along anyone you know who would be interested.
Hey everyone,
If you are planning on coming to the Nantahala with us this weekend, make sure you register using the links above the message board. Once you have registered I’ll send you an e-mail with details about caravaning.
I will be in a Dodge Durango and will have room for one other Kayak and a mountain bike if someone needs a ride. I will just riding around the campsite and not in Tsali. I can probably carry 3 people depending on the amount of gear you bring. Stack’em, pack’em and rack’em and save on gas!!!!! let me know if you need a lift!
Car pooling sounds super! I’m a problem child this weekend though due to previous plans and won’t be able to leave here until around 9ish Friday night or Early Sat morning – if that works for anyone’s plans let me know.
Looking forward to meeting y’all this weekend.
